Considered one of Africa's largest freshwater predators, the Goliath tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath) is also among the most fearsome fish in the Congo River. Its enormous jaws, equipped with 32 large, razor-sharp teeth that are always visible due to the lack of lips, make it instantly recognisable. Its uniquely double-jointed jaw allows the upper and lower jaws to open at the same time, which enables it to capture and eliminate prey with astonishing speed.
The Goliath tigerfish is a fierce and highly intelligent predator that relies on its exceptionally well-developed senses, including outstanding eyesight, to become an extraordinarily efficient hunter. It is an obligatory fish-eater as an adult and resides at the apex of the freshwater food chain. It is so well known for being a fearless predator that it has been seen hunting young crocodiles.
Geographical Distribution
Found in West and Central Africa, including Niger, Senegal and Chad, as well as the Volta and Mono river systems.
Habitat
The Goliath tigerfish inhabits large rivers and lakes with well-oxygenated water, favouring fast-
flowing currents and deep-water environments.

• Deep lakes with clear, well-oxygenated water.
• Warm tropical freshwater environments in Central Africa.
• Waters supporting abundant fish populations that provide a plentiful food supply.
• Extensive river basins such as the Congo River.
Lifestyle and Behaviour
The Goliath tigerfish, a strong predator, can be found living either solitarily or in small groups. It engages in seasonal migrations associated with reproduction: individuals emerge in upstream freshwater environments, drift downstream as juveniles while maturing, and return upstream as adults to breed. Its predatory behaviour is augmented by sensory adaptations that are highly specialized.
Social Behaviour

- No parental care after spawning.
- A single female may lay up to 780,000 eggs, which are dispersed across flooded plains.
Relationship with their environment:
- Advanced sensory system: An internal air-filled organ enables the detection of low-frequency waves and vibrations, allowing prey to be located with remarkable precision.
- Exceptional vision: Excellent eyesight complements its ability to detect movement and vibrations.
- Specialised dentition: Equipped with 32 large, fang-like teeth that interlock when the mouth is closed. These teeth are continuously replaced throughout life, and the double-articulated jaw delivers an exceptionally powerful bite.
- Apex predator: Occupies the highest trophic level within its freshwater ecosystem. It is renowned for its ability to prey on young crocodiles.
Diet
In the wild
- Highly carnivorous species.
- Juveniles (under 9–10 cm): Feed on plankton, freshwater shrimps, small insects and crustaceans.
- Adults (over 9–10 cm): Become obligate piscivores.
- Also prey on young crocodiles approaching the water and capture birds feeding close to the riverbank.
Under human care
- Require a diet rich in a variety of fresh fish.
Conservation Status
The Goliath tigerfish (Hydrocynus goliath) is classified as Least Concern (LC) on the Red List of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
Main threats:
- Sport fishing: Highly sought after as a trophy fish because of its impressive size and reputation.
- Habitat degradation: Pollution of rivers and lakes together with dam construction.
- Disruption of migratory routes: Hydroelectric dams interfere with breeding migrations.
